The advantages of online psychological therapy

:Online psychological therapy has many advantages

  • The sessions takes place in the safe and familiar home environment

  • Saving time and costs of arrival and return

  • Availability to people in relocation, on a long journey or from peripheral areas

  • Providing a solution in situations of extreme anxiety where it is difficult for the patient to leave the house

  • When there is a physical disability and difficulty in mobility

  • Online treatment guarantees confidentiality and anonymity, without anyone identifying the patient or knowing about the treatment.

Just as in face-to-face therapy, the therapeutic relationship is also the most significant factor for success in online therapy. Conducting sessions in the comfort of a client’s home can enhance their sense of security. For adolescents, who often retreat to their rooms, online therapy offers a unique window into their personal space—a setting that reflects their interests and individuality. This glimpse into their private world helps build a shared language, deepens the therapeutic relationship, and fosters trust

Integrating technology into the therapeutic process

Online treatment allows the use of technological means that can help and speed up the treatment process.

For example:

  • Incorporating videos as part of a learning process about cognitive and emotional processes or as part of gradual exposure in phobia and anxiety situations.

  • Using a shared board and combining images in order to create a "vision board", a therapeutic "journey diary", analysis of problem solving processes visually and more.

  • Playing a song that reflects the emotional content with which the patient identifies.

  • Filling out "forms" and evaluation questionnaires as part of understanding the difficulties and monitoring the progress of the treatment.

  • In issues of low body image, or social anxiety, the use of a camera can help with treatment, since observing oneself through the camera while mediating, is an exposure to the threatening situation and improves the ability to cope.

  • Using a camera can also help raise awareness of the patient's non-verbal communication and facial expressions.

How to prepare for online treatment

It is recommended to prepare a computer with a camera and microphone connection for meetings. Using headphones will help the feeling of privacy if there are other people at home.

The meetings should be held in a fixed room, with the possibility of maximum privacy. It is recommended to close applications such as Mail and WhatsApp so that notifications do not distract the mind during the meeting.
